Or maybe it\u2019s a news broadcast. If you have been wondering about the differences between V.O., O.S., and O.C., then this article is for you! We will be breaking down the differences between the trio, when they are used, and some common mistakes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>V.O. 101<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">V.O., formatted as (V.O.) to the right of the character&#8217;s slugged name, stands for voice over and is used when a character\u2019s dialogue will be recorded separately because the character isn\u2019t in the same physical location. Think of it as a voice of God like narration. V.O. is also used for phone conversations and any audible content coming from a TV or radio, like a news broadcast, radio announcer, and even FaceTime. Let\u2019s look at the example below from the screenplay, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awriterforyourwriter.com\/uploads\/1\/0\/7\/9\/10796816\/baby_boy__2001_.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BABY BOY<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awriterforyourwriter.com\/screenplay-vault.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screenplay Vault<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-658\" src=\"https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-300x124.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"583\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-1024x422.png 1024w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-768x316.png 768w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-1536x633.png 1536w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-2048x843.png 2048w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-1568x646.png 1568w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 583px) 100vw, 583px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this example, the audience is hearing the protagonist\u2019s Jody&#8217;s voice over as we view the image of Jody as a full grown man inside of a womb. Jody is the narrator of the film so we see (V.O.) next to his name. We are not hearing the voice of the man in the womb; we&#8217;re hearing the narration like the voice of God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at another example of (V.O.) from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awriterforyourwriter.com\/uploads\/1\/0\/7\/9\/10796816\/judas-and-the-black-messiah-screenplay.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-659\" src=\"https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-2-300x189.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-2-300x189.png 300w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-2-1024x645.png 1024w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-2-768x484.png 768w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-2-1536x968.png 1536w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-2-1568x988.png 1568w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/V.O.-2.png 1908w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this scene our protagonist Fred Hampton is listening to a vinyl recording of a Malcom X speech. This example shows how to format music playing on the radio. In JUDAS, they also chose to italicize the dialogue, but it isn&#8217;t a standard formatting choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>O.S. vs O.C.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s dive into O.S. or off screen, formatted similarly to (V.O.). O.S. is when a character is speaking in a different physical space from the camera but can be heard. Think of it like this: Say two characters are in the living room and a third character is in the bathroom. The character in the bathroom, who is in a different physical space but can be heard, would be considered O.S. Make sense? We focus back into the kitchen with Deborah, but Maroney can still be heard from the bedroom as he speaks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is one final example from JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-661\" src=\"https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/O.S.-1-300x157.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"592\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/O.S.-1-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/O.S.-1-1024x536.png 1024w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/O.S.-1-768x402.png 768w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/O.S.-1-1536x803.png 1536w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/O.S.-1-2048x1071.png 2048w, https:\/\/content.orgosco.com\/theprofessionalpen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/O.S.-1-1568x820.png 1568w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this scene, there was a shoot out in the apartment. Doc is in the bedroom but can be heard from the living room by Caple, so this is formatted as (O.S.).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let&#8217;s tackle O.C. or off camera, formatted similarly to the aforementioned elements. O.C. is when a character is speaking in the same space but is physically out of the frame\/not \u201con camera.\u201d For example, let&#8217;s look back at the living room scenario. This time, both characters are in the living room, but the speaker is not in the frame.
