TV Review: OUR KIND OF PEOPLE

OUR KIND OF PEOPLE: Several people have asked me to review this show. I wasn’t going to, but here we go. #SpoilerAlert

First, understand that story aside, as a viewer, I like grounded dramas. Therefore, my expectations of enjoying this show were low because Lee Daniels creates more soapy dramas. Tonally, it isn’t my thing.

With that said, surprisingly, I rather enjoyed the pilot. Then in episode two, the tone didn’t just step a toe into the soap, it took a deep dive. All secrets were exposed and Papa Pope showed up with a gun.

Try as I may, I never made it past episode 3. And I tried.

The lesson here is that everyone won’t like everything and that’s ok.

Objectively speaking, if all of the secrets have been exposed by episode two, why do I need to continue to journey with these characters? To watch beautiful black people hang out in the Hamptons? If it were reality TV, it may be enough. But it isn’t. Tension decreases when everyone knows everything. Tension is necessary for drama. The entire premise was lost and therefore, it lost me.

They were beautiful though. 😍

Watching those three episodes did send me back to rewatch REVENGE, which is what I expected of OUR KIND OF PEOPLE. At this age, REVENGE is a bit too dramatic for me though x amount of years ago I loved it. However, its breadcrumb game is on point. Emily doesn’t reveal who she is to her childhood love until the season finale of the third season. THREE SEASONS of a secret. She watched him marry another woman. She became the godmother to their child. That’s tension, ladies and gentlemen. Long game. And though revenge is the foundation of the story, the goal changes each season to break up the monotony. It’s a great series. Take notes.
